Week 2 Joe Wheeler State Park to Midway Marina Fulton MS

Monday October 31, 2022
Florence Harbor Marina

There were two locks to get through that had to be scheduled with the lock masters.  The barge traffic is picking up as many of them have been diverted from the Mississippi due to low water levels.  The first lock, Joe Wheeler Dam was at 9:30am.  Next was a short cruise to Wilson Dam where we cooled our heels until 4:00 pm.  Florence Harbor Marina waited for our small flotilla of fellow Looper boats to arrive and get tied up.

Florence Harbor Marina

Stayed a second night at Florence Harbor Marina.
We made a trip to Walmart to re-provision with the courtesy car, washed the boat, and enjoyed a nice dinner at the Rock Bottom Grill.  We learned that the 'season' here at the marina was coming to an end.  While the dock stays open for fuel and water the restaurant closes.

The colors are really beginning to show.  We had a         very long cruise for us today a whopping 38.8            miles.  No locks today and the weather was glorious, sunny, and 80.  We anchored at Yellow Creek and it was very calm.  We enjoyed a very peaceful night.

Not as many barges today as we expected.  Every time we pass them I'm amazed at their sheer size and power of them and we always give them a wide berth.

Thursday, November 3
Bay Spring 3 Anchorage

Another calm evening on anchor with beautiful fall colors.  Our friends from Surface Interval III and Moon Dance IV picked us up in their dingy and we enjoyed an amazing sunset and cocktails with our new friends.

Three locks today.  The boats we are traveling with contacted the lock masters and the first lock, Whitten Dam was ready for us at 8:00 am.  Our flotilla was through the lock and headed for #2 Montgomery Lock and finally #3 Rankin Lock within an hour.  Going south on the TennTom we are always locking 'down'. After entering the lock and tying off to a bollard, the gates close, and the water drops anywhere from 50 to 80 feet.  The downriver gates open and we slowly make our way out like a row of ducklings.

Friday Night November 4, 2022
Midway Marina, Fulton MS

We did not want to stop so early but the weather forecast called for 20 to 30 mph wind gusts, rain and possible tornados. We decided to call it an early day and enjoy this beautiful marina for a couple of days.  The dock attendant Wyland guided our flotilla in on our VHF radios with precision and a great sense of humor! After gathering for docktails with all of the Loopers and waiting out the storm, we enjoyed dinner at Guys Place Grille. They have great food, and very friendly staff. You can't beat the price, we tried the Fish and Chips for $10!

Midway Marina

A rainy day but a great time to read, take advantage of cooking while on shore power, and a 5G WIFI  to do some route planning.
