Week 29 Daytona to Jekyll Island

Sisters Creek Jacksonville Free Dock

After a beautiful cruise we stayed on the free dock at Sisters Creek near Jacksonville. The falling tide and wind made docking a little tricky, thankfully a fisherman from the dock helped us secure our lines.

Monday - Tuesday
Fernandina Harbor Oasis Marina

This quaint town located on Amelia Island was a wonderful experience. Great food, lovely day and night strolls to coffee shops and good restaurants. The Fernandina Harbor Marina was located right at the end of the town main street.

Wednesday
Sea Camp Anchorage Cumberland Island

Dungeness Ruin
We decided to head north to Cumberland Island and hopefully get a glimpse of the wild horses. This island did not disappoint. We rode bikes through huge oaks, hundreds of years old and learned the story of the Dungeness Plantation. This enormous plantation was originally built by the Nathaniel Greene family and later bought and expanded by the Carnegie family.

The horses are a legacy from the early Spanish conquerors and showed up several times! Sadly, there is also a much sadder side, the original Indians were decimated from smallpox and the plantation was successful mainly due to slavery. Eventually the homes and buildings fell into decay.

Thursday
Plum Orchard Anchorage Cumberland Island

We travelled to another anchorage in the middle of the island to tour the Plum Orchard Mansion. Built by the Carnegie family for one of their children, this once magnificent home is being preserved by the National Park Service and we toured the entire mansion and learned about its history. This island is also famous for another more recent event.  The First African Baptist Church located on the far north end of the island was the location of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette's wedding. We were not able to get to this remote area and will save it for another day.

The US Navy Called!

On our way back to Fernandina we were hailed on our VHF radio by the US Navy Security Patrol which got our attention! They were moving a submarine and we were escorted by one of the security vessels.

Friday - Fernandina Oasis Marina - Again!

Travelled south again to Fernandina to pick up the new engine part. Fingers crossed our engine gremlins have finally been vanquished.

Saturday

An early morning cruise of a few short hours and we were at the Jekyll Island Harbor Marina. We're  were very excited about touring this amazing island. This small family owned marina has complimentary golf carts and bikes to tour the island!
